The start of a new journey
As so many already, I want to start documenting my financial journey. The goal is to share how the portfolio is doing as well as the companies that are composing it to help me have a more rigorous approach to investment.
1. Who am I
First, maybe a couple of word on me. I am Thibault, a 28 years old French-Belgian living in Portugal since very recently (December 2023). I grew up in France (in the Paris’s suburbs) until 18, then moved to Belgium to study - (I graduated of a Bsc in Economics and a Msc in Information Management) and as so many, went to work in a big consulting firm.
I moved to Switzerland with my Partner mid-2022 to finally moved again to set ourselves in the very north of Portugal end of 2023.
My current occupation is Product Owner in a Swiss-based Fintech that has few offices in Europe.
The last, but not least bit of me, is that I have a (young) son for whom I opened also an account to try to get him interested to Finance and Financial Literacy (as well as a saving location for his future).
2. My Financial Journey
I started relatively young to be interested by Finance and the Financial market despite it being a very different world from which I come from (my parents do not have any shares nor were very interested in all things related to Finance).
I opened my first account on my second year of university, with my very little savings. From the start, I always tended to keep very little cash on Savings and invest it on my broker account, only recently trying to put money aside in case of an emergency spending or purchase of a house.
If I would look back at my track record, I would say that it is far from being very good despite choosing some great companies (I remember buying Safran at 50€ or some Christian Dior at 130€) sold too early but also bad ones (Hugo Boss at 100€+ or Genfit at 60€) sold too late but at least overall, I didn’t lost my shirt :)
The focus has been on trying to learn to find my own investment philosophy that is making myself comfortable while trying to perform and enjoy the way. This is I guess what people would say is the advantage for starting early, you can find your way even if the snowball is not getting bigger as fast as you wish.
3. My Philosophy
After running big portfolio and concentrated portfolio, I went to the conclusion that, even if I like to find companies to invest in, I tend to underperform great investors which is why I decided to share my investment allocation to reach:
70% of the portfolio into performant allocators (Independance & Expansion, Rockwood, Idi and Tamburi Investment Partners)
30% of stock picking (mainly on European Small and Midcap) with a focus on GARP
As you will see, the portfolio is not yet there, but the goal is to reach this allocation progressively by investing all new money into the 70% until it becomes 70%.
I still hope to one day get as good as my idol - Peter Lynch or Nomad Partners.
4. The Portfolios
I have 2 (actually 3) portfolio: 1 Degiro and 1 interactive brokers (also 1 swissquote which I refrain from using due to its cost, but sometimes companies are only available there - hi Turkey)
Overall - 45.527€:
De Giro - 37.629€:
Interactive Brokers - 8.128€:
Swissquote - 1.000€ split between Invesco GARP S&P 500 and AEFES
